THE HOLLOW CROWN DVD Review

$

I’m far from being the biggest Shakespeare scholar on the block, so having me review The Hollow Crown might not seem like the best idea at first blush.  However, the beauty of this mini-series is how accessible it is to even those of us whose last brush with the playwright came during high school English.  It helps that the cast is composed of up-and-coming faces of this generation of actors, alongside veterans of stage and screen who define the word gravitas and could probably do Shakespeare in their sleep.   Much like the long-standing works of the English author himself, The Hollow Crown is equally enjoyable for neophytes making their introduction to Shakespeare or scholars looking for a new interpretation.  Hit the jump for my review. Richard II Feature The first installment of the four-part series is adapted from Shakespeare’s “King Richard the Second”, centering on the English king who ruled between 1377–1399. Adapted and directed by Rupert Goold, Ben Whishaw (Cloud Atlas) stars in the title role, with notable names Rory Kinnear (Skyfall) playing Bolingbroke and David Morrissey (The Walking Dead) playing the Earl of Northumberland, just to name a few.  Whishaw has the perfect sensibility to play the vain and eccentric ruler who sealed his fate after mishandling a feud between two nobles. Two things immediately stand out when watching Richard II.  The first is the outstanding production quality. Attention is paid to every detail, whether it’s the flowing robe and jeweled crown of Richard II or the various landscapes and settings the ...

B.J. Novak Comments on His Character in THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2

In its first trailer, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was willing to give fans a peek at what might be in store for the third film, but it's still keeping a few secrets.  We don't have official confirmation on who Felicity Jones is playing (although she may have let it slip) or on B.J. Novak's role.  But in a recent interview, Novak told The Huffington Post: I'm in a couple of scenes. Yeah, I was never told whether or not I could say. I can say that I work at Oscorp. And I am someone from the comic books, someone from the original. So, yeah, I'm somebody. I wouldn't say I'm pivotal, but I'm not an extra, either. If that's the case and if the viral campaign lines up, I'd put my money on Alistair Smythe, son of Spider-Slayer creator Spencer Smythe, who also works at OsCorp.  Whoever Novak is playing, we'll probably find out before the film opens on May 2, 2014.

A new red-band clip from director John Wells’ adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Tracy Letts play August: Osage County has been released online, and it is very NSFW.  The story follows the women of a family whose lives have splintered in many directions until a crisis bring them back to their childhood home and to the dysfunctional woman who raised them.  This new clip is a nice showcase of the complicated and tense relationship between Meryl Streep’s pill-popping matriarch and Julia Roberts’ oldest daughter.  As you can see, there’s not exactly a language filter in this family, and Roberts more than holds her own opposite Streep for the film’s runtime, turning in her best performance in years. Hit the jump to watch the new red-band clip, and click here to read Matt’s review from the Toronto International Film Festival.  The film also stars Julianne Nicholson, Ewan McGregor, Benedict Cumberbatch, Margo Martindale, Chris Cooper, Abigail Breslin, Juliette Lewis, Dermot Mulroney, and Sam Shepard.  August: Osage County opens in limited release on December 25th and expands nationwide on January 10th. Via Yahoo! Movies. Here’s the official synopsis for August: Osage County: AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY tells the dark, hilarious and deeply touching story of the stong-willed women of the Weston family, whose lives have diverged until a family crisis brings them back to the Midwest house they grew up in, and to the dysfunctional women who raised them. New TERMINATOR TV Series in the Works; Will Tie into Feature Film Reboot

Prepare for plenty of Terminator goodness over the next few years.  Annapurna Pictures and Paramount Pictures are currently developing a feature film reboot of the franchise to be directed by Thor: The Dark World’s Alan Taylor, but in addition to that film it appears that a new TV series is in the works as well.  Megan Ellison and David Ellison, the producers of the new Terminator film, are producing this new TV show iteration with Thor and X-Men: First Class scribes Zack Stentz and Ashley Miller onboard to write and executive produce.  Moreover, this new TV show will directly tie into the new Terminator movie, which is being planned as the first in a trilogy of films.  Hit the jump for more. Annapurna Pictures, the studio behind American Hustle and Zero Dark Thirty, landed the rights to the Terminator franchise back in 2011, but they only just started making serious movements on the feature film front.  The rebooted film is due in theaters on July 1, 2015, but THR reports that a new TV series is being developed in tandem with the film.  Here’s the logline for the show per THR’s report: The TV series will follow a critical moment from the first Terminator film (1984) and, where the film's story goes one way, the upcoming series will take the same moment in a completely different direction. As the rebooted film trilogy and the new TV series progress, the two narratives will intersect with each other in some surprising and dramatic ways. Interweaving the feature ...

CRAVE Review

The world is crazy, and it can make you feel weak, but Charles de Lauzirika's Crave takes fear and frustration and turns it into a meandering bore.  De Lauzirika is very aware of his film's influences, and there's no pretention about carving out new territory, but he doesn't show us anything we haven't really seen before.  Just as his protagonist looks to find love and strength, Crave stumbles around trying to find a novel idea worth exploring.  Further burdened by miscasting and an ill-fitting visual style, the film slogs around, occasionally bumping into a worthwhile performance or relationship, but is ultimately sucked into a void where the harder it tries to find meaning, the less it means anything. Aiden Pogue (Josh Lawson) is a crime scene photographer who, when not looking at the mangled carcasses of murder victims, can only see his inadequacies.  He envisions himself as a violent vigilante whose brave deeds will be rewarded with sex from beautiful women.  When Aiden somehow manages to start sleeping with his cute neighbor Virginia (Emma Lung)—a development that has Aiden breaking the fourth wall to tell us that this isn't one of his fantasies—he becomes infatuated with her, but his insecurities continue to overwhelm his life. De Lauzirika is acutely aware of his film's primary influences, Taxi Driver and Falling Down.  At one point, Aiden has a "You talkin' to me?"-esque scene where he envisions blackmailing a sleazy guy.  At another point, Aiden vents his frustrations to his detective friend Pete (Ron Perlman), ...

INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS Review

[This is a re-post of my review from the 2013 New York Film Festival.  Inside Llewyn Davis opens today in limited release.] It’s a terrible thing to feel like you’re not the protagonist of your own story—to simply exist with nowhere to go. Llewyn Davis (Oscar Isaac) is a man who doesn’t fit into his own life, and in the Coen Brothers’ most melancholy film to date, Inside Llewyn Davis, we’re taken on the moving journey of a folk singer trying to succeed in the right place at the wrong time. He can’t create a future from the songs of the past, and he lives ambivalently in the present. Toning down the stylized hyperrealism of their previous movies, Joel and Ethan Coen have created a work that still bears their signature, yet takes them and us to a restrained, yet tonally and emotionally frustrating place. Anchored by a subtle, touching performance from Isaac, as well as beautiful renditions of folk songs, Inside Llewyn Davis is a somber look at a wandering musician. Set among the Greenwich Village folk scene in 1961, Llewyn Davis trudges through a meager existence trying to make it as a solo folk artist. The story follows a week in his life, opening with his sorrowful rendition of “Hang Me, Oh Hang Me.” He then goes out to the venue’s back alley, where he’s attacked by a shadowy figure. Llewyn’s fortunes don’t improve. He’s stuck carrying around his friends’ cat after he accidentally lets it out and the door ...

Marvel has confirmed some exciting news relating to its upcoming string of Netflix shows.  We learned last month that Cabin in the Woods co-writer/director Drew Goddard was in talks to spearhead Marvel’s Daredevil series, and now the studio has confirmed that Goddard will indeed be running the show.  The Cloverfield scribe will write and direct the first episode and will act as showrunner and executive producer on the show’s entire 13-episode run.  Daredevil is one of four one-season Netflix series that Marvel is producing, which also includes Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, and Luke Cage.  All of the one-season shows will lead up to a The Defenders miniseries. Daredevil will be first out of the gate, with Marvel confirming that it will premiere on Netflix in 2015.  With a guy as passionate and talented as Goddard at the helm, Daredevil looks to be in very good hands.

Willem Dafoe delivers a finely drawn performance as a small town bookie in Out of the Furnace, Scott Cooper’s dark and gritty drama set in a struggling blue-collar Pennsylvania steel town.  A local lowlife with connections, John Petty (Dafoe) is part of the community and friends with steelworker Russell Baze (Christian Bale) and his brother, Rodney (Casey Affleck), an Iraq vet struggling to transition back to civilian life.  Petty knows the brothers have fallen on hard times, but Rodney is into him for quite a sum of money, and business comes first.  Opening December 6th, the film also stars Woody Harrelson, Zoe Saldana and Forest Whitaker. In an exclusive interview, Dafoe talked about how his sense of trust in Cooper combined with the strong script and an impressive cast was a big draw, why he enjoys playing characters that are conflicted and full of contradictions, what inspired him to bring an Eastern European flavor to his character, how he found Cooper to be a positive, confident director who values actors, his collaborative approach with the other actors, what shooting on location in Braddock lent to the film, and his upcoming projects including The Grand Budapest Hotel, Nymphomaniac and A Most Wanted Man.  Hit the jump to read the interview. Jerry Bruckheimer’s move from Disney to Paramount is now official.  The prolific producer and Disney decided to part ways after the box office bust of this summer’s The Lone Ranger, on which Bruckheimer and director Gore Verbinski argued successfully for a budget north of $200 million.  Paramount officially announced today that Bruckheimer has finalized a three-year first-look deal with the studio set to begin next April, returning him to the home where he got his start as the producer of films like Top Gun, Beverly Hills Cop, and Days of Thunder. Per Deadline, Bruckheimer’s first film back at Paramount will be the long-developing Beverly Hills Cop 4, which Brett Ratner will direct after he finishes up Hercules.  Eddie Murphy is reprising his role and Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol scribes Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec are penning the screenplay.  Additionally, the Top Gun sequel is another priority for the studio, with Tom Cruise also attached to return.

While Andy Serkis first rose to prominence as the actor who brought The Lord of the Rings’ Gollum to life by way of motion-capture, he’s been dabbling a bit more behind-the-scenes as of late.  Serkis acted as the second-unit director on a good deal of Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit trilogy, and he’s poised to make his feature directorial debut on a motion-capture adaptation of George Orwell’s classic novel Animal Farm.  The project was first announced over a year ago, but now Serkis has provided an update on the film, revealing that filming is slated to get underway in 2014.  Hit the jump for more. Speaking with ScreenDaily (via Twitch), Serkis revealed that “principal photography will take place in the middle to third quarter of next year.”  The film is being produced by Serkis’ performance capture studio Imaginarium, marking their first feature film.  The multi-talented performer went on to talk a bit about his approach to Animal Farm: “What we’re trying to do is fairly unique. It’s going to be entirely performance captured, so rather than photographing real animals and showing them with talking mouths, it will all be generated by the interaction between the actors playing those roles…the physicality and facial expressions of all the animals will come directly from actors’ performances.” He added that he has “a great cast” finalized but he couldn’t reveal it just yet.  As for his studio’s other film, The Bone Season, Serkis said they’re currently in the process of looking for writers and directors.  The actor will ...

The legal entanglement that was the Indiana Jones franchise has now been untangled.  When Disney purchased Lucasfilm, there was a question of how future Indiana Jones films would proceed since Paramount released the first four movies.  Today, Disney announced that it has reached an arrangement with Paramount regarding the franchise.  Under the new deal, Disney has acquired distribution and marketing rights to all future Indiana Jones films along with its current ownership of the rights that it secured when it purchased Lucasfilm.  Hit the jump for more, including where Paramount fits into this new deal. Though Disney now owns the Indiana Jones series and can produce future films at its leisure, Variety notes that under the new deal, Paramount will still be responsible for the distribution of the previous four Indiana Jones films and will enjoy financial participation on any future Indiana Jones films that are released.  A fifth Indiana Jones film has yet to be officially announced, but a property that lucrative likely won’t stay dormant for too long in today’s franchise-happy box office climate. Though George Lucas and Steven Spielberg have been more apprehensive about moving forward with a follow-up to Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Harrison Ford is very much game to don the whip and hat once again.  The 72-year-old actor recently said that he would do Indiana Jones 5 “in a New York Minute,” and with all legal entanglements out of the way, I wouldn’t be surprised to hear word about some sort ...
