The casting process continues on the upcoming Terminator reboot, and it appears that the search for Sarah Connor has now been whittled down to two actresses.  We previously reported that Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones), Brie Larson (21 Jump Street), and Margot Robbie (The Wolf of Wall Street) were among the actresses on the shortlist for the lead role of Sarah Connor, and now Deadline reports that the list has been narrowed down to Clarke and Larson.  Thor: The Dark World helmer Alan Taylor is onboard to direct, and the report notes that Clarke currently has the edge for the part.  Of course, Taylor has worked with Clarke before on Game of Thrones, having directed a number of episodes of the HBO series’ first and second season before landing the Marvel gig. Hit the jump for more on the upcoming Terminator film. While Clarke may top the list of contenders, Larson is currently fielding serious awards attention for her performance in this summer’s indie drama Short Term 12.  Deadline notes that Paramount and Taylor want to cast the Sarah Connor role before moving on to casting John Connor and Kyle Reese, but an earlier report noted that Tom Hardy was being eyed to play human resistance leader John Connor.  Plot details regarding the Terminator reboot are few and far between at this point, but the film is being spearheaded by Megan Ellison’s Annapurna Pictures—the studio behind Zero Dark Thirty, American Hustle, and Her—so hopes are high for this new vision of the ...

It's looking like Spencer Smythe will be involved in some capacity in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, although it will probably be a minor role.  A couple months ago, The Daily Bugle's Tumblr page had the report "that OsCorp stock has climbed four points, and that’s due in part because of 'significant advancements in robotics by the head of the engineering division, Spencer Smythe'."  For those who don't read the comics, Smythe is the inventor of the robotic Spider Slayers, whose purpose is to seek and destroy Spider-Man.  Now the Bugle has an interview with Smythe, and he comes off as arrogant, but also drops the line, "Well, if you want to catch the right fly, you have to spin the right web." Hit the jump for the interview.  The film stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Jamie Foxx, Paul Giamatti, Dane DeHaan, Felicity Jones, Chris Cooper, B.J. Novak, Colm Feore, and Sally Field.  The Amazing Spider-Man 2 opens in 3D on May 2, 2014.  The first trailer will be released tomorrow. Via The Daily Bugle: OsCorp Industries wants to usher in an age of robotics, and has pumped piles of cash into robotics research. My interview mission? Pry some secrets out of OsCorp’s Head Engineer, Spencer Smythe. DB: Can you summarize your recent work in one word? Smythe: Mobility. DB: Elaborate, please. Smythe: If you wanted an elaborate answer, why did you ask for a single word? DB: Tell me something no one else knows about your research. Last month, Peter Jackson and some of the cast from The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug did a Q&A with fans that was simulcast across the globe, and they'll be talking directly to the fans again later today.  Jackson and stars Richard Armitage (who plays the dwarf leader Thorin Oakenshield) and Evangeline Lilly (who plays the elf Tauriel) will be doing at Google Hangout at 10:15 PST.  If you plan to ask them a question, make sure it's the most obscure, esoteric question possible.  If you stump them, you win!  Your prize is awkward silence. Hit the jump to watch the Google Hangout.  The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug opens in 2D, 3D, HFR 3D, and IMAX 3D on December 13th.

30 Things We Learned from the BREAKING BAD Writer’s Room at the Writers Guild Foundation

Breaking Bad may be over, but the well deserved victory lap (which will wind ‘round the sure-to-be-bestselling series box set en route to a slew of Emmy Awards next year) continues unabated.  Last night, Collider was on the scene in Beverly Hills at the Writer’s Guild Foundation to see the show’s seven member writing staff reunite to share stories and life advice. The lively panel, moderated by former The Walking Dead Showrunner Glen Mazzara and featuring Sam Catlin, Peter Gould, Gennifer Hutchinson, George Mastras, Moira Walley-Beckett, Thomas Schnauz, and of course Vince Gilligan was full of insight and laughs as the crew reminisced about abandoned home invasion subplots, alternate character deaths, the structure of the writer’s room, alternate endings for the series, Gilligan shooting himself in the thigh with a dart, and much, much more.  Hit the jump for a recap and the top thirty things you should know. Mazzara made for an excellent emcee, quickly sidestepping the awkwardness of hosting a panel for a show aired on a network from which he was fired, before moving on to rich and detailed questions. Unlike most Q&A’s, Mazzara managed to avoid asking even a single pat, EPK-ready query. Instead, he focused on deeper concepts, often adding insightful and wry color commentary as a means to segue between topics. The writers were in top form too. While Gilligan is known for his humble and personable nature, I was somewhat surprised to see a stage filled with eight drama writers, all of whom were personable and ...

Gal Gadot to Play Wonder Woman in BATMAN VS. SUPERMAN

Ladies and gentlemen, we have our Wonder Woman.  It’s been clear that Warner Bros. is ramping up its DC presence in the upcoming Man of Steel follow-up Batman vs. Superman, and rumors have swirled that Wonder Woman would be introduced in the film along with Ben Affleck’s Batman and a few other comics characters.  A report surfaced last month that Olga Kurylenko (Oblivion), Elodie Yung (G.I. Joe: Retaliation), and Gal Gadot (Fast & Furious 6) were auditioning for the female lead in director Zack Snyder’s upcoming film, but the nature of the role was being kept under wraps.  Well now not only do we know which actress won the role, but also that the identity of the character is indeed Wonder Woman.  Hit the jump for more. Warner Bros. announced today that Gal Gadot will be playing Wonder Woman in Batman vs. Superman.  It’s unclear whether we’ll just see shades of the superhero character in the pic or if we’ll get to see plenty of Wonder Woman in action, but Zack Snyder had this to say about the casting: “Wonder Woman is arguably one of the most powerful female characters of all time and a fan favorite in the DC Universe. Not only is Gal an amazing actress, but she also has that magical quality that makes her perfect for the role. We look forward to audiences discovering Gal in the first feature film incarnation of this beloved character.” Gadot is an Israeli-born actress best known for her role as Gisele in the ...

Warner Bros. is making moves on Batman vs. Superman.  The studio just announced that Fast & Furious star Gal Gadot will be playing Wonder Woman opposite Ben Affleck’s Batman and Henry Cavill’s Superman in the film, and now it appears they have their sights set on casting the pic’s villain.  Though the working title would lead us to believe that Batman and Superman’s relationship will at one point be contentious, the film will also have a proper villain.  Now that Wonder Woman is set, director Zack Snyder can focus on casting that role, and one of the contenders is reportedly Callan Mulvey. Hit the jump for more, including which Justice League members will be making cameos in the film. Embedded in their story about the Wonder Woman casting, Variety reports that Callan Mulvey is “someone Warner Bros. is eyeing” to play the antagonist in Batman vs. Superman.  The New Zealand actor had a small role in Zero Dark Thirty, but he has larger roles in the upcoming sequels 300: Rise of an Empire and Captain America: The Winter Soldier.  The nature of the villain in Batman vs. Superman is being kept firmly under wraps, and will probably stay that way for quite some time if Snyder’s approach to not revealing Man of Steel’s General Zod presence is any indication. Rumors have swirled recently that Doomsday might be the Big Bad in Batman vs. Superman, and the character would certainly make for a formidable opponent that would necessitate Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman’s talents.  In ...

The critics awards are off and running after the New York Film Critics Circle announced its picks for the best of the year yesterday, and today the National Board of Review has named Her the best picture of 2013.  Spike Jonze was also named Best Director for the film, while the acting honors went to Bruce Dern (Nebraska), Emma Thompson (Saving Mr. Banks), Will Forte (Nebraska), and Octavia Spencer (Fruitvale Station).  Always an eclectic list, the NBR’s Top 10 includes The Wolf of Wall Street, Gravity, Lone Survivor, and Prisoners.  Wholly absent from the Top 10 is the NYFCC’s pick for Best Film, American Hustle. The NBR winner for Best Picture has failed to match up with Oscar since 2008’s Slumdog Millionaire, as last year’s award went to Zero Dark Thirty, but for the past 13 years every NBR winner has landed a Best Picture nomination, so this bodes well for Her's Oscar prospects.  Read the full list of NBR winners after the jump. Warner Bros. has released a new trailer for director Noam Murro’s action sequel 300: Rise of an Empire.  The story takes place before, during, and after the events of 300, centering on the naval battles between Themistokles (Sullivan Stapleton) and Artemisia (Eva Green) and the latter’s control over Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro).  This trailer shows more of what we’ve seen from the previous trailers, highlighting the slow-motion action and rousing speeches.  I was pleasantly surprised by the extended footage that Warner Bros. showed off at Comic-Con this summer, so hopefully Murro delivers a film that does the legendary Battle of Artemisum justice. Hit the jump to watch the new trailer.  300: Rise of an Empire also stars Lena Headey and opens in 3D on March 7, 2014. Here’s the official synopsis for 300: Rise of an Empire: Based on Frank Miller's latest graphic novel Xerxes, and told in the breathtaking visual style of the blockbuster "300," this new chapter of the epic saga takes the action to a fresh battlefield—on the sea—as Greek general Themistokles attempts to unite all of Greece by leading the charge that will change the course of the war. "300: Rise of an Empire" pits Themistokles against the massive invading Persian forces led by mortal-turned-god Xerxes, and Artemisia, vengeful commander of the Persian navy.

From co-creators Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk, the FX series American Horror Story uses a unique and compelling approach to television, with a different setting, different characters and a rotating cast of actors for each season. For Season 3, American Horror Story: Coven tells the secret history of witches and witchcraft in America, with a cast of talented actresses that includes Jessica Lange, Kathy Bates, Angela Bassett, Patti LuPone, Sarah Paulson, Frances Conroy, Lily Rabe, Taissa Farmiga, Emma Roberts, Gabourey Sidibe and now even Stevie Nicks. During this recent exclusive phone interview with Collider, actress Emma Roberts (who plays out-of-control Hollywood starlet and resident bitch Madison Montgomery) talked about how she came to be a part of Coven, that she was initially nervous about the subject matter, how much fun it is to play a bitch, how far ahead she was made aware of her character’s story arc, the fantastic clothes and shoes she gets to wear, how great it is to work with all of these talented actresses, just how much crazier things can get (they actually cut out a sex scene from Episode 7), the fan reaction she gets from people when she’s out, and how she’d love to return for Season 4.  She also talked about how she hopes to continue to find a balance between roles in comedy and drama, and how it’s her dream to play a Margot Tenenbaum (from The Royal Tenenbaums) type of character.  Check out what she had to say after the jump, ...

Though Martin Scorsese has been branching out into a number of genres over the past few years—including psychological thrillers (Shutter Island) and family films (Hugo)—he’s returning to the world of black comedy with this month’s The Wolf of Wall Street.  The film is based on the memoir of Jordan Belfort and stars Leonardo DiCaprio as a hard-partying, drug-addicted stockbroker who was indicted in 1998 for security fraud and money laundering and served a 22-month federal prison stretch.  THR has been doing a number of roundtable interviews for this year’s awards contenders, but today they’ve unveiled a treat by way of a 25-minute video interview with Scorsese, DiCaprio, Jonah Hill, and screenwriter Terence Winter about all things Wolf of Wall Street. The interview is a great watch, as they discuss their first meetings with each other, how Hill won the role, Steven Spielberg showing up on set, the editing process, and Scorsese confirms that (unsurprisingly) we won’t be seeing a longer director’s cut on home video.  Hit the jump to watch the interview.  The Wolf of Wall Street opens on Christmas Day. TriStar Pictures has released a new trailer for director Paul W.S. Anderson’s disaster epic Pompeii.  The film stars Kit Harington (Game of Thrones) as an enslaved Celtic gladiator named Milo who falls in love with a noblewoman (Emily Browning) on the eve of a massive volcanic eruption that destroys Pompeii, an event that also brings him face-to-face with the man (Kiefer Sutherland) who slaughtered his family years earlier.  While this trailer teases a bit of the character interplay between Harington and Browning, the main focus is on the massive amount of destruction that Anderson unleashes in the film—which is to be expected when your movie is titled Pompeii. Hit the jump to watch the new trailer, and click here to check out a trio of new images.  The pic also stars Carrie-Anne Moss, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Jessica Lucas, and Jared Harris.  Pompeii opens in 3D on February 21, 2014. Via Yahoo! Movies. Here’s the official synopsis for Pompeii: Set in 79 A.D., POMPEII tells the epic story of Milo (Kit Harington), a slave turned invincible gladiator who finds himself in a race against time to save his true love Cassia (Emily Browning), the beautiful daughter of a wealthy merchant who has been unwillingly betrothed to a corrupt Roman Senator. As Mount Vesuvius erupts in a torrent of blazing lava, Milo must fight his way out of the arena in order to save his beloved as the once magnificent Pompeii crumbles around him.

The CW drama series The Tomorrow People follows a generation of humans born with paranormal abilities, who are the next evolutionary leap of mankind.  Up until a year ago, Stephen (Robbie Amell) was a “normal” teenager, but then he learned that he is part of a genetically advanced race with the abilities of telekinesis, teleportation and telepathic communication, and that this race is being hunted down by a paramilitary group of scientists known as Ultra.  In Episode 8, “Thanatos,” Stephen is determined to uncover what he hopes is the key to finding his father and turns to someone named Dr. Aldus Crick, who helped establish Ultra with both Jedikiah and Roger Price for answers. MOB CITY Review: Frank Darabont Returns to Television With a Hard-Boiled Drama for TNT

Since Frank Darabont's much-discussed break-up with AMC over The Walking Dead, fans have continued to keep a close eye to where the producer and showrunner would land next.  It didn't take long for him to strike a deal with TNT to create and develop a series for them based on John Buntin's book L.A. Noir: The Struggle for the Soul of America's Most Seductive City, now called Mob City (formerly L.A. Noir and Lost Angels), which chronicles the true story of the ongoing battle between the police and the mob in the 1940s. Hit the jump for more on the series, and why it might succeed where other mob shows have failed. The mob, especially early to mid-century operations, has been well-chronicled in recent years on TV, to questionable result.  CBS's Vegas was an admirable offering about white hats and black hats in a 1960s struggle for the town, but was ultimately cancelled after its initial run.  Magic City, on Starz, took place in Miami in 1959 and incorporated the mob into the hotel world (somethingVegas also did), but wasn't renewed for a third season.  Boardwalk Empire, HBO's long-running drama about 1920s mobsters in Atlantic City (and New York and Chicago), remains, but it's a perpetually-under-the-radar show that has never caught the zeitgeist or audience interest like some of HBO's other marquee dramas. (And let's not even mention Mob Doctor, shall we?) Thus, Mob City already has an uphill battle.  But in its favor, like many of these shows, there's pedigree in the production: Darabont has brought with him a number of former Walking Dead cast members, and the number ...

We recently brought you some new images from Michael Bay's Transformers: Age of Extinction, but now we can pair them with some commentary from the director himself.  Bay talked about the level of "goofiness" from his last foray into the Transformers universe and how the fourth film will depart from that in a more cinematic direction.  Stars Mark Wahlberg and Nicola Peltz also talk about their experience working with Bay from the set of the fourth film in the franchise.  Hit the jump to see what they all had to say. The film also stars Kelsey Grammer, Stanley Tucci, T.J. Miller, Titus Welliver, Han Geng, Sophia Myles, and Li Bingbing.  Transformers: Age of Extinction opens in theaters on June 27, 2014.  Bay recently spoke with Yahoo from the set of Transformers: Age of Extinction about a number of changes made for the new film, which is more of a continuation of the previously established story than it is a true reboot.  As Bay himself says: “It feels like a new chapter, this movie, but it’s not a reboot. This movie lives in the history of the 'Transformers' movies, and this one starts three years after the last. It feels fresh.” Perhaps part of the "not a reboot but a new chapter" line is semantics, but another part is about putting distance between the previous film and the current one.  In Bay's words: “I wanted the first Transformers to be very suburban and less cool.  This is a much more cinematic one. I focused on keeping this one slick. There won’t be any goofiness in this ...
