Nico Tortorella Talks THE FOLLOWING Season Finale, His Character’s Fate, Hardest Scene to Shoot, and More

From show creator/executive producer Kevin Williamson (The Vampire Diaries), the dark, fast-paced thriller The Following is an epic story of good versus evil, as told through the eyes of ex-FBI agent Ryan Hardy (Kevin Bacon), who is forced to return to the case that destroyed his career when it becomes evident that notorious serial killer Joe Carroll (James Purefoy) is at the center of a cult of like-minded killers who have created an insidious web of blood and carnage.  With Hardy’s help, a team of agents, including Mike Weston (Shawn Ashmore) and cult specialist Debra Parker (Annie Parisse), attempt to unravel the deadly plot of murder before the body count rises. During this recent interview, actor Nico Tortorella (who plays Joe Carroll follower Jacob Wells) talked about his character’s fate, why he thinks Jacob forgave Emma (Valorie Curry) so easily, what he’s enjoyed about working with Kevin Williamson, the hardest scene he had to shoot, and how gratifying it’s been working on the show.  Check out what he had to say after the jump, and be aware that there are major spoilers, if you’re not caught up on the season. Question:  So, what was it like to film your death scene? NICO TORTORELLA:  I found out probably a week beforehand, and that was the last scene that I got to shoot with Valorie [Curry].  It was intense and dramatic and emotional.  It was my goodbye to her.  We’ve had such an incredible season, working together.  The neck prosthetic piece that I had on ...

Collider Goes to C2E2 2013: Over 30 Cosplay Images from the Convention Floor Featuring THE DARK KNIGHT RISES, STAR WARS, MORTAL KOMBAT & More

Following my first Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo (otherwise known as C2E2) back in 2011, I wrote that I believed the event had a ton of potential going forward. Having the opportunity to attend again this weekend, even I was surprised at just how much it had grown in only two short years. Granted, this time around I was visiting on a Saturday as opposed to a Friday. That said, in 2011 I was mostly able to enter the convention floor at my leisure without even a hint of a wait. This year, I found myself buried a few thousand deep in a line not terribly dissimilar from ones I've encountered at that one convention that's held in San Diego every summer. I may be wrong, but I can't help but think that the day of the week I attended isn't solely responsible for the increased demand. After the jump you can check out some photographic highlights from my Saturday at C2E2 2013 in Chicago's McCormick Place. Mostly comprised of Cosplay, some of my personal favorites include Chewbacca sharing a moment with Mega Man, Zombie Robin, Wayne's World, and a stellar Spawn costume just to name a few. For this and a lot more, join me after the break. Check out the images below [click to enlarge]: [gallery link="file" order="DESC" columns="1"]

Weekend Box Office: PAIN & GAIN Leads with $20 Million; IRON MAN 3 Passes $195 Million in International Debut

With just days to go before the summer movie season blasts off with Iron Man 3, the domestic box office offered up another decidedly ‘meh’ moment. Paramount’s Pain & Gain was on top with a respectable $20 million while the new rom-com The Big Wedding badly underperformed. The real excitement came on the global market, where Iron Man 3 broke records with its international launch.  Title Weekend Total 1.  Pain & Gain $20,000,000 $20 2.  Oblivion $17,443,000 $64.7 3.  42 $10,725,000 $69 4.  The Big Wedding $7,500,000 $7.5 5.  The Croods $6,600,000 $163 6.  G.I. Joe: Retaliation $3,620,000 $116.3 7.  Scary Movie 5 $3,457,000 $27.4 8.  Olympus Has Fallen $2,768,000 $93 9.  The Place Beyond the Pines   $2,699,000 $16.2 10.  Jurassic Park 3D $2,310,000 $43.6 Iron Man 3 rolled out across the globe beginning last Wednesday, where it set opening day records in Italy, the Philippines and Taiwan. Elsewhere, the film’s international debuts were similarly impressive, often representing the highest weekend opening since 2012’s The Avengers. Over its first five days in 42 territories (the sequel opens in China on May first), Iron Man 3 earned a reported $195.3 million. Numbers like that are good enough to have me hoping that there is time to salvage the dismal 2013 box office. I’m sure it seems unfair to Michael Bay that Pain & Gain is being overshadowed by Iron Man 3 this weekend. Unfortunately, that’s what happens when you choose the last weekend in April for your debut. Conventional wisdom holds that, on this week, audiences reserve their hard-earned cash to spend on the marquee titles of May. In fact, over the past five years, only one film has bucked that trend: 2011’s Fast Five. The $86 million debut of that franchise title caught ...

Hollywood! Adapt This: WILD CARDS

In adaptation-related news this week, we learned that director Takashi Shimizu will be at the helm for a live-action feature of Kiki's Delivery Service and that J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot was bidding on the TV rights to Stephen King's time-traveling alt-history tome, 11/22/63.  Today's installment of Hollywood! Adapt This features another revisionist history  that isn't contained in just one volume, but rather spread out over twenty-some issues.  This sci-fi superhero anthology series dates back to 1987 and continues still today with Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin acting as contributor and editor.  What's it all about?  Hit the jump to find out.  Hollywood! Adapt this: Wild Cards.  What It's About: Starting in 1987, Wild Cards is a twenty-one volume (soon to be twenty-two) anthology that takes place mainly in an alternative-history New York City where an experimental virus  has killed, deformed or granted superpowers to those exposed.  In 1946, the alien virus - known as Xenovirus Takis-A or colloquially as the Wild Card virus - kills 90% of those it infects, while physically deforming 9%; those lucky few who appear unaltered but acquire superpowers are the remaining 1%.  In sticking with the anthology's theme of playing cards, dying from contraction of the virus is known as "drawing the Black Queen," the deformed victims are referred to as "Jokers" and the 1% are dubbed Aces.  There is also a subset of Aces known as Deuces since their particular powers are pretty lame, like the ability to levitate pennies or to turn into a puddle of ...

Mira Nair and Riz Ahmed Talk THE RELUCTANT FUNDAMENTALIST, Filming in the Real Locations, the MONSOON WEDDING Musical, and More

The dramatic thriller The Reluctant Fundamentalist tells the story of a Pakistani man named Changez Khan (Riz Ahmed), who came to the States in search of the American Dream, but found himself in the middle of a hostage crisis.  In the aftermath of 9/11, Changez finds himself caught between his family’s homeland and the country that now looks at him suspiciously.  From acclaimed director Mira Nair, the film also stars Kate Hudson, Kiefer Sutherland and Liev Schreiber. During this recent exclusive phone interview with Collider, filmmaker Mira Nair and actor Riz Ahmed talked about what it’s been like to get such great feedback about the film, how challenging it was to successfully weave the love story with the thriller aspect, and what it added to the experience to shoot some of the film in the real locations.  Mira Nair also spoke about the experience she’s had turning her popular film Monsoon Wedding into a Broadway stage musical.  Check out what they had to say after the jump. Collider:  When you do a film like this, it must be something of a labor of love.  What’s it like to have the film finished, be getting feedback from audiences, and to hear people talking about it, in ways that you hoped they would? RIZ AHMED:  It’s amazing!   MIRA NAIR:  I’m allowing myself to get excited because I’m seeing what we hoped for, which is an unbelievable engagement with the story.  People are seeing themselves in it, no matter where they come from.  And what’s especially ...

Director Ariel Vromen Talks THE ICEMAN, Researching the Serial Killer’s Story, Casting Michael Shannon and Chris Evans, NARCO, and More

Director/co-writer Ariel Vromen’s The Iceman chronicles the life of notorious contract killer Richard Kuklinski (Michael Shannon) who earned the nickname for freezing the bodies of his victims to throw authorities off his trail.  A man of many contradictions, Kuklinski was by various accounts a loving husband, a devoted father, and a ruthless hitman who concealed his work from his family.  Opening on May 3rd, the film also stars Winona Ryder, Chris Evans, David Schwimmer, Ray Liotta and Robert Davi. At the recent press day, Vromen talked about why he thought Kuklinski’s story would make a fascinating film, how he convinced Shannon to shoot a test scene that helped secure the financing, why the ying yang dynamic between Shannon and Ryder worked so well, what led to some of the surprising casting choices for the supporting roles and how he balanced those with veterans of the genre, and why he was inspired by American mob movies while growing up in Israel.  He also discussed his next project, Narco, a drug-centric action thriller set in the world of narco-trafficking submarines.  Hit the jump to read the interview. Question:  How did this story come to you and what is it that made you realize this would make a really good film? Ariel Vromen:  I saw the documentary and I saw all the materials about him.  I saw all the outtakes.  I identified that there was something about this character that was not just black and white.  There is a grey area that he’s zoning between, trying ...

Now playing in theaters is director Michael Bay’s fantastic dark comedy Pain & Gain.  The film is based on a crazy true story and stars Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne Johnson as two bodybuilders who get caught up in an extortion ring and kidnapping scheme that goes terribly wrong.  Pain and Gain also stars Anthony Mackie, Rebel Wilson,  Tony Shalhoub, Ed Harris, Rob Corddry, Ken Jeong, and Bar Paly.  For more on the film, watch some clips or the red-band trailer. At the Miami press junket, I landed an exclusive interview with Anthony Mackie and Rob Corddry.  We talked about what it was like to work with Michael Bay, their reaction to finding out the story was based on real events, the great work by all the actors, and more.  Hit the jump to watch the interview and definitely check out Pain and Gain.  It’s absolutely worth seeing. Anthony Mackie and Rob Corddry: How the true story it's based on is crazy The great performances and what was it like on set/preparing for the roles What it was like working with Michael Bay and the speed at which he works

Final Trailer for FAST & FURIOUS 6 Teases the Film’s Massive Amount of Action

Universal Pictures has released a final trailer for Fast Five director Justin Lin’s sequel Fast & Furious 6, and it’s chock-full of summer blockbuster goodness. This trailer does a great job of showing off the film’s ginormous scale, as we get some extended looks at Lin’s many action sequences.  Car chases through the streets of Europe, brutal fistfights in which The Rock pulls some legit wrestling moves, and a car chase/fight sequence involving a tank are all things we can look forward to with Fast & Furious 6.  Producer Neal Moritz recently told us that the film features two or three of “the best action sequences you will ever see” and noted that Fast 6 is the best film of the series yet.  We’ll get a chance to judge for ourselves in a few short weeks, but this trailer definitely makes the film look like one hell of a ride. Hit the jump to watch the trailer.  The film stars Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Dwayne Johnson, Jordana Brewster, Michelle Rodriguez, Ludacris, Tyrese Gibson, Joe Taslim, Sung Kang, Gina Carano, and Luke Evans.  Fast & Furious 6 opens on May 24th. Here’s the official synopsis for Fast & Furious 6: Since Dom (Diesel) and Brian’s (Walker) Rio heist toppled a kingpin’s empire and left their crew with $100 million, our heroes have scattered across the globe.  But their inability to return home and living forever on the lam have left their lives incomplete. Meanwhile, Hobbs (Johnson) has been tracking an organization of lethally skilled mercenary drivers across 12 countries, whose ...

Watch: Kevin Spacey, Steven Spielberg, and Barack Obama Get Goofy in Sketches from the 2013 White House Correspondents’ Dinner

The 2013 White House Correspondents' Dinner was held on Saturday night at the Washington Hilton.  On hand to mingle with the White House press corps and the President were the likes of Sofia Vergara, Claire Danes, Psy, Kerry Washington, Gerard Butler and Veep star Julia Louis-Dreyfus (who finally got in the same room with POTUS!).  Of course, Barack Obama's speech before the assembled journalists, politicians and celebs was the centrepiece of the evening; and it was full of jokes on his alleged socialism, super PACs, and Jay-Z's Cuban adventure. A tough act to follow, no doubt, but Conan O'Brien did his best, delivering a lengthy address that took aim at the major news networks, as well as the President's relationship with Congress. And of course, like any proper office party, there were sketches. In the evening's intro, Kevin Spacey's ruthless House of Cards character Frank Underwood got to test his mettle against real-life politicians like Senator John McCain; then, later on, Steven Spielberg popped in to discuss his (fictional) Lincoln follow-up, Obama, and the only man he could possibly trust to bring the 44th President to life on-screen: Daniel Day-Lewis.  Hit the jump to take a gander at speeches and sketches alike. Here are the skits: And here are the Obama and O'Brien speeches:

Guy Pearce, Rebecca Hall and Director Shane Black Talk IRON MAN 3, Giving up the F-Word for PG-13, and the Christmas Setting

Kicking off the blockbuster movie season, Marvel Studios is releasing Iron Man 3 on May 3rd.  This time out, brilliant billionaire inventor Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.), aka Iron Man, faces a terrifying enemy, known as The Mandarin (Sir Ben Kingsley), whose reach knows no bounds, and he must rely on his own instincts to protect those that he loves.  From director Shane Black (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang), the film also stars Gwyneth Paltrow (“Pepper Potts”), Don Cheadle (“James Rhodes”), Guy Pearce (“Aldrich Killian”), Rebecca Hall (“Maya Hansen”) and Jon Favreau (“Happy Hogan”). During this press conference at the film’s Los Angeles junket, co-stars Guy Pearce and Rebecca Hall, along with Shane Black, talked about the ambitions for Iron Man 3, the version that will be shown in China with additional footage, giving up the use of the F-word for the PG-13 film, why Christmas was the right setting for the story, what made this version of The Mandarin the perfect villain, and working with co-star Robert Downey, Jr.  Check out what they had to say after the jump, and be aware that there are some spoilers. Question:  Shane, did your relationship with Robert Downey, Jr. on Kiss Kiss Bang Bang lead to your involvement with this film? SHANE BLACK:  I can only imagine that having worked previously with Robert contributed to him calling me and asking me aboard this somewhat more ambitious production.  I had worked briefly with him, and sat with him and [Jon] Favreau, during the inception of the first ...

3 Clips from Nicolas Winding Refn’s ONLY GOD FORGIVES Starring Ryan Gosling

Director Nicolas Winding Refn’s follow-up to his fantastic 2011 film Drive is set to make its debut at the Cannes Film Festival next month, but three whole clips from Only God Forgives have graciously made their way online a tad early.  The film’s red-band trailer promised another intense and gorgeous collaboration between Refn and star Ryan Gosling, and these three clips don’t disappoint.  While I’m eager to see what the always-reliable Gosling has in store for us this time around, it’s Kristin Scott Thomas who is the highlight of these clips as she plays the mother of Gosling’s character, a woman who urges her son to seek violent revenge for the death of his brother in Thailand. Hit the jump to bask in the moodiness of Refn’s latest.  Only God Forgives also stars Vithaya Pansringarm and will open in theaters on July 19th. Via The Playlist. Here’s a synopsis for Only God Forgives: Julian (Gosling) lives in exile in Bangkok where he runs a Thai boxing club as a front for the family’s drugs smuggling operation. When Julian’s brother Billy is killed their mother, Jenna (Kristin Scott Thomas), arrives in the city. She wants revenge and forces Julian to find the killer. Julian’s contacts in the criminal underworld lead him directly to The Angel of Vengeance, a retired police officer who knows everything and who is both Judge and Punisher. Jenna demands that Julian kill The Angel of Vengeance, an act that will cost him dearly.

GAME OF THRONES Recap: “Kissed by Fire”

0
0
Because both HBO and AMC are stingy with screeners, this episode of Game of Thrones has been filtered in my mind through Mad Men.  I'm pretty sure Sally is destined for the Iron Throne.  Back in actual Westeros though, we ignored Bran and three-eyed crows again and bounced all over the realm and beyond with almost everyone else, in an episode that was mostly about setup and a little bit about friendship.  Also a wee bit about pickled babies, but that's another matter.  Everyone is growing restless in the calm after Stannis' failed attempt on the capitol late last season, and are back to scheming about relationships and marrying people off, with mixed results.  You know what never gives mixed results?  Figs.  Hit the jump for more. After a very successful last two weeks when a few storylines got (mercifully) dropped so characters were given more than a few seconds on screen, "Kissed By Fire" was jam-packed with all kinds of revelations. Jon Snow knows nothing, but knows where to put it, and maybe invented oral sex.  Sansa is nearly married off twice before being handed to Tyrion (that smile she had won't last for long), while Cersei is destined for matrimony with Loras.  The Lord of Light was pretty busy: resurrecting Beric, freeing the Hound and bewitching Stannis' wife Selyse, who has bought into whatever Melisandre is selling hook, line and sinker. But "Kissed By Fire" also played up the importance of trust and friendship, which was portrayed the most beautifully through Jaime and ...

MAD MEN Recap: “The Flood”

0
0
I was a little more than fed up with Mad Men last week, and as a few others have pointed out, what makes this season so difficult is not only Don's refusal to grow (more on that later) but also the fact that the party is winding down (smoking and drinking is now bad for you!), and let's not even get into some of those godawful fashions.  But "The Flood" was a very interesting episode, and actually a really great one, that spent another hour focusing on the reactions of the characters to a huge historical tragedy.  Though Don stays in stasis, the rest of the characters seem to have really gone somewhere, for good or ill.  Hit the jump for why "it's a shameful, shameful day!" Ginsberg's father tells him that when the Biblical flood waters came, the animals got onto the ark two by two.  "You gonna get on the ark with your father?" he taunts him, after Ginsberg ends his date early and doesn't seem interested in any more.  "The Flood" was, in part, about who you call when the flood waters are rising.  In the wake of a tragedy like the assassination of an inspirational leader, where do you find your comfort? On the positive end of the spectrum was Peggy, firing on all cylinders.  She doesn't get the condo she wanted, but maybe, as her real estate agent says, it just wasn't meant to be (despite the tragedy opportunism for a low bid).  What was more interesting ...

New STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS Clip Features a Stand Off between Chris Pine and Benedict Cumberbatch; Plus, Win a Chance to Meet J.J. Abrams and the Cast!

In this new clip from J.J. Abram's upcoming Star Trek sequel, Star Trek Into Darkness, Chris Pine's James T. Kirk and Benedict Cumberbatch's John Harrison have a heated exchange through a plate-glass prison wall.  While there's no action in this particular scene, the clip does a nice job of showcasing Kirk's passionate fury and Harrison's cold and calculating nature (and apparently his penchant for reciting numerals). The film also stars Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Alice Eve, Simon Pegg, John Cho, Anton Yelchin and Karl Urban.  Star Trek Into Darkness is slated for a May 15th IMAX 3D release and a 2D and 3D release on May 17th.  Hit the jump to watch the clip and for details on how you can meet the film's director and cast at the Los Angeles premiere! Jamie Foxx in Talks to Join ANNIE Starring Quvenzhané Wallis

0
0
A couple months ago, Beasts of the Southern Wild star Quvenzhané Wallis was tapped to star in the remake of Annie.  For those unfamiliar with the musical (or the comic strip on which it was based), Annie centers on a poor orphan who is adopted by Daddy Warbucks, a wealthy benefactor.  According to Heat Vision, Jamie Foxx is in talks to play "Benjamin Stacks", who is "a variation of the Daddy Warbucks personage" and in case you couldn't figure it out, his name comes from stacks of $100 bills.  While I understand that it's appropriately updated, I couldn't help but hear a needle-scratch when I read that name simply because of how corny it sounds.  Hopefully, it works better in the context of the movie and the tone director Will Gluck and producers Will Smith and Jay-Z are going for. Foxx is currently filming on The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and is developing a horror series for SyFy.  He'll be seen later this summer in the action flick White House Down.  Annie is eyeing a fall production start for a 2014 release.

Finally opening Stateside this weekend is Shane Black's Iron Man 3.  The international debut has already set new box office records and will likely set the pace for the rest of 2013's superhero features.  In a new clip from Iron Man 3, Robert Downey Jr. and Don Cheadle appear out of their armor as Tony Stark and James Rhodes respectively.  Rhodes-y is worried about his pal, and with good reason. Also starring Gwyneth Paltrow, Guy Pearce, Rebecca Hall, Stephanie Szostak, James Badge Dale, Jon Favreau and Sir Ben Kingsley, Iron Man 3 opens in 3D on May 3rd.  Hit the jump to watch the clip and a new TV spot. Check out the new Iron Man 3 clip and TV spot below (apologies for the audio quality): Here’s the official synopsis for Iron Man 3: Marvel’s Iron Man 3 pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy’s hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. THE SPECTACULAR NOW Director James Ponsoldt to Helm Hillary Clinton Biopic, RODHAM

0

Hillary Clinton is currently gearing up for her 2016 Presidential run (I don't care if it's not official at this point; we all know it's coming), but we may be getting a biopic about her before her campaign even begins.  Last year, we reported that Young Il Kim's script Rodham hit #4 on The Black List (a list of the best unproduced screenplays).  Per the synopsis, "During the height of the Watergate scandal, rising star Hillary Rodham is the youngest lawyer chosen for the House Judiciary Committee to Impeach Nixon, but she soon finds herself forced to choose between a destined path to the White House and her unresolved feelings for Bill Clinton, her former boyfriend who now teaches law in Arkansas."  Today, James Ponsoldt (The Spectacular Now) has come on board to direct the sure-to-be-controversial film. Hit the jump for more. According to The Wrap, "industry executives who have read the script claim it offers a potentially award-worthy role for one lucky ingenue. Several top actresses have expressed interest in the project, though insiders stressed that the project is still in the early stages of development."  It's an actor playing a famous person in a drama.  Of course it has awards potential.  It will also court controversy simply because Clinton is still considered to be active in politics even though she recently resigned her post as Secretary of State.  A film featuring a famous actress (paging Jennifer Lawrence…) will likely lead to a bombardment of questions for Clinton regarding the picture ...
