Release date announcements and changes come courtesy of Box Office Mojo. Universal's Dracula, previously titled Dracula Year Zero, will star Evans in the title role.  Rather than the usual portrayal of the bloodthirsty count, this iteration will show Dracula's formative years as a young mortal prince.  When his family is threatened by a savage sultan, he sacrifices his soul in order to save them and thus becomes the world’s first vampire.  The film’s producer Mike De Luca previously spoke with Steve a few years ago when the studio had pulled the plug on the picture due to budget issues and ...

Watch Two New TRUE BLOOD Season 6 Promos

Two new promos for HBO's gory vampire drama True Blood focus on Sookie's brother Jason and the werewolf Alcide, giving viewers a little hint of what might be coming up in the show's sixth season.  Some fans were relieved that Alan Ball was relinquishing his showrunner duties this year (moving on to create the fantastic Banshee on Cinemax), but with the news that new showrunner Mark Hudis left shooting halfway through this new season and was replaced with series writer Brian Buckner, well, to quote one of my favorite films, "alarm bells are ringing, Willie!"  Still True Blood always has a way of pulling us back into its chaos, and I'm sure this season will be no exception.  Hit the jump for the new teaser videos. A little less than a month ago, HBO released the first teaser trailer for the series, which returns June 9th.  As was mentioned in that post, the new season has a shorter episode order which will hopefully mean that the storytelling is a little tighter.  But with some massively odd developments to end Season Five though … we'll have to see. In the new clips, Jason is spouting out some of his ridiculous(ly great) dialogue and attempting to harm, Nora, Eric's "sister."  Typical relationships are in play: Jason hates vamps, Sookie protects them, the world turns.  In the other clip, Alcide, now a pack leader, argues with his splinter pack about taking the now-always-in-wolf-cub-form Emma.  But as Martha snarls to the dissidents, "she's part of this pack whether you like it or not."  Rumor has it that this season will ...

Over the past few days, we’ve been sharing a number of updates from Neal Moritz that were gleaned in Steve’s recent lengthy interview with the producer.  Moritz talked extensively about Fast & Furious 6, 7, and the future of the franchise, he provided revealing updates on the 21 Jump Street sequel, he talked quite a bit about the upcoming supernatural actioner R.I.P.D., and he also provided a promising update on director Shane Black’s developing Doc Savage movie. While we’ll be providing the full interview here on Collider soon, we wanted to share one last batch of updates on a number of projects.  Hit the jump for news concerning the Battle: Los Angeles sequel, the graphic novel adaptations of Preacher and The Boys, and director D.J. Caruso’s disaster film Invertigo. With regards to a sequel to Jonathan Liebeseman’s 2011 sci-fi war film Battle: L.A., Moritz said they are currently developing the screenplay: “We have a new script being developed for Battle: L.A. 2 right now.  It will be [in another city].  Christopher Bertollini, who wrote the first one, is writing the second one.” Another long-developing project is an adaptation of the graphic novel Preacher.  Sam Mendes was attached to direct for a while, but he previously told Steve that he just couldn’t quite crack how to tell the story tonally.  Moritz confirmed that they are moving in a different direction on the project now, but it still sounds like it’s a ways off: “We’re actually talking about a little different direction on it.  It is a ...

Atlanta Readers: Win Passes to See Marvel’s IRON MAN 3

Summer movie season is about to begin, and it's going to kick-off in a big way with Iron Man 3.  Iron Man 2 is admittedly the weakest of the Phase One bunch, but all my faith has been restored with writer-director Shane Black (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang) at the helm.  The trailers have conveyed a very different tone for our hero, and the action looks to be the best in the series thus far.  Iron Man 3 definitely looks like it can deliver the goods when it comes to starting Summer Movie Season 2013 on a strong note. I'm please to announce that we'll be giving away two pairs of passes to the 3D Atlanta screening of Iron Man 3.  Hit the jump to find out how you can see the film early and for free.  The movie stars Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce, Rebecca Hall, Stephanie Szostak, James Badge Dale, Jon Favreau, and Ben Kingsley.  Marvel's Iron Man 3 opens in theaters in 3D on May 3rd. This is going to be a packed screening, so let me be explicit on the number of passes.  There will be two winners.  Each winner will win a pair of "Admit One" passes.  To enter, send an e-mail to Collider.Passes@gmail.com with the subject line “IRON MAN 3”.  The screening is on Tuesday, April 30th at 7pm in 3D at Regal Atlantic Station, so don’t enter if you think you’ll be unavailable.  Please note that a pass is not a ticket.  ...

Check out the latest casting news below: Scarlett Johansson (The Avengers) is set to lead the new action flick from writer/director Luc Besson (The Fifth Element) titled Lucy.  Besson once again features a female ass-kicker in the lead and puts a new spin on drug mule stories with this new script. Jake Gyllenhaal (Donnie Darko) and Rene Russo (Ransom) will star in writer/director Dan Gillroy's indie, Nightcrawler.  The story centers on a young freelance journalist who explores L.A. by night while working the crime beat. Hit the jump for more. Heat Vision reports that Johansson is in final negotiations to lead Besson's Lucy.  The title character "is a woman who is forced to become a drug mule. But the drug instead goes into her system, transforming her into an ass-kicking machine. She can absorb knowledge instantaneously, is able to move objects with her mind and can't feel pain and other discomforts."  Johansson certainly has ass-kicking training down after her stints as Black Widow in both The Avengers and the upcoming Captain America: The Winter Soldier.  She is currently filming the Cap sequel and would move onto Lucy after wrapping. Variety reports that Gyllenhaal will lead Nightcrawler with Russo co-starring.  The film will be the directorial debut of Dan Gillroy, who co-wrote The Bourne Legacy with his brother, Tony Gillroy; the duo will co-produce the thriller.  Gyllenhaal will be seen later this year opposite Hugh Jackman in Denis Villeneuve's Prisoners, and may replace Jude Law in Gavin O'Connor's Jane Got a Gun, which recently got off to a rocky start.

PAIN & GAIN Review

Entitlement is a central facet of the American Dream. If you work hard, you should be rewarded. We believe we live in a meritocracy despite all evidence to the contrary. In some walks of life, you can get out what you put in. It's a truth in exercise, and it's mostly been a truth for the films of Michael Bay. He is a director completely without subtlety and grace, and is one of the most financially successful directors in American history. His films are cinematic excess in their purest form; indifferent to story and character, they have disgustingly large budgets pumped in and grandiose spectacle pumped out. His new film, Pain & Gain, may not have the funds of his recent blockbusters, but it wholeheartedly shares the cocky and reckless spirit of his controversial oeuvre. Sympathetic to his meathead protagonists, Bay has crafted a picture that is energetic, fun, and almost too large for life. Daniel Lugo (Mark Wahlberg) is a personal trainer who feels like he's not getting what he's owed from the American Dream. Fueled by the empty ravings of a hackneyed motivational speaker, Daniel sees himself as a “Doer” who believes that the American Dream isn't paying out to him, but it rewards a jerk like his client, Victor Kershaw (Tony Shaloub). Because Kershaw undermines the joy and generosity the American Dream is supposed to provide, Daniel feels no regret in bringing in fellow bodybuilders Paul Doyle (Dwayne Johnson) and Adrian Doorbal (Anthony Mackie) to kidnap and torture ...

Corey Stoll to Lead THE STRAIN, Guillermo del Toro and Carlton Cuse’s FX Series

The first bit of casting news for Guillermo del Toro's FX series project, The Strain, is finally here!  It looks like Corey Stoll (House of Cards) will lead the vampire adaptation.  The Strain centers on a team of scientists who wage war against an ancient strain of virus that confers vampirism, along with those it infects.  Del Toro and Chuck Hogan - who both wrote the original trilogy of novels - have co-written the screenplay which del Toro will direct.  Hit the jump for more. A press release reports that Stoll will play the lead role of Dr. Ephraim Goodweather, who is New York's head of the Center for Disease Control's "Canary Team."  The team investigates the appearance of a mysterious virus and band together with everyday New Yorkers in order to combat the growing threat against humanity.  Here's what del Toro had to say about landing their lead: “To me, having the right lead for The Strain series was perhaps the most important creative task. To be able to secure the perfect actor in Corey Stoll sets the project on the right track. To embody a character like Ephraim Goodweather – who transitions through every emotion and situation imaginable, and which anchors the narrative of the series – requires amazing talent and craft.  Corey has both in spades as he has demonstrated it over and over again.” Stoll can next be seen in Jaume Collet-Serra's actioner Non-Stop starring Liam Neeson and was recently cast in Shawn Levy's This Is Where I Leave You, starring Timothy Olyphant, ...

Kiefer Sutherland Talks THE RELUCTANT FUNDAMENTALIST, Status of the 24 Movie, and Paul W.S. Anderson’s POPMEII

The Reluctant Fundamentalist is director Mira Nair’s latest meditation of her distinctive subject matter: the exploration of East-West interactions and relations.  The movie is based on Mohsin Hamid’s book of the same title and follows the story of Changez (Riz Ahmed), a young Pakistani Columbia grad pursuing his professional goals in the corporate scene of New York and living the American dream until terrorism strikes the United States on 9/11 and he is turned into the enemy.  Kiefer Sutherland stars as Jim Cross — the managing director of a high-end boutique Wall Street hedge fund company who hires Changez and becomes somewhat of a father figure to him. However, their relationship dissolves when a cultural divide forces Changez to choose between two vastly different worlds. In this exclusive phone interview with Collider, actor Kiefer Sutherland talked about the complexity of his character and why he wanted to do the film.  He also gave an update on the status of the 24 movie and the Paul W.S. Anderson historical thriller Pompeii, in which he plays the villain.  Check out what he had to say after the jump. Collider:  What’s the status of the 24 movie? Do you think that’s still going to happen, at some point? KIEFER SUTHERLAND:  I have no idea.  I’ve tried to help that along.  There’s a lot of moving parts to it.  It’s not something that I’m actively pursuing, but if it were to ever happen, that would be great. So, you would still be on board with the project, if it ...

Kurt Russell Shares Behind-the-Scenes Stories at AFI’s Night at the Movies Screening of THE THING

Last night the Arclight Hollywood hosted AFI’s Night at the Movies, a celebration of 13 great American films hosted by the stars that helped make them famous.  As a part of the event Kurt Russell was on hand to introduce a screening of John Carpenter’s 1982 classic The Thing.  Having been born a few years too late for The Thing’s theatrical run, I take every opportunity I can to watch it on the big screen and my favorite part is always the audience.  You can’t beat an audience that’s just as excited to be there as you are; an audience that screams, cheers and applauds at all the right moments – that is, I used to think you couldn’t beat it until last night’s screening.  Turns out a little reminiscing from Russell beforehand make the whole thing just that much more fantastic.  Hit the jump to check out the highlights of what he had to say. Here are Russell's comments about The Thing: Russell was involved in the production, kicking around ideas with Carpenter, long before he was asked to play J.R.  MacReady.  He wasn’t actually brought on to act until production had begun shooting second unit in Alaska. The Thing is the third of five movies that Russell and Carpenter have made together, and Russell pegs it as the best of the lot calling it, “John’s finest hour.” There are no female characters in the film and the only female presence is the voice of the chess computer MacReady plays (voiced by Adrienne Barbeau).  ...

Marvel has released a new clip from Iron Man 3, which shows Tony Stark dealing with the fallout of the events of The Avengers: "Nothing's been the same since New York."  Robert Downey Jr. walks the fine line of arrogance and charm better than just about any other actor, but it helps for us to see Stark in a vulnerable moment, as he is here with Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow). HANNIBAL Episode Recap: “œuf” and “Coquilles”

First of all, if you haven't watched the clips from Hannibal's unaired fourth episode "œuf" do so now because I am going to talk about it along with "Coquilles."  What I found so interesting about NBC's "cannibalized" version (their pun!) of that controversial fourth episode is that by eliminating the Case of the Week, Hannibal turned into a really beautifully meditative character study.  It didn't flow particularly smoothly (what a surprise since it was chopped up), but at the same time it was really hypnotic.  With all of the therapy sessions, it kind of reminded me of HBO's In Treatment, plus hallucinations and eating humans.  While I also enjoyed "Coquilles," the Case of the Week, which I thought was pretty weak, distracted from the better character moments.  Hit the jump for why I'm so excited I figured out what to do with that œ character ...  In his introduction to "œuf," Bryan Fuller said the reason why giving viewers the character building moments from that episode was so important is because the relationship between Hannibal and Abigail Hobbs becomes a "load bearing" one in the future.  An interesting prospect.  In the other article I posted with the clips, I suggested that it will be interesting to see if Hannibal ends up making her into a sort of protege, or if she has a more humanizing effect on him. From what we saw in "œuf" though, it looks like for now Hannibal is wholly in control.  Abigail is at a divide -- she is not her father's daughter in ...

First Trailer and Poster for PRINCE AVALANCHE Starring Paul Rudd and Emile Hirsch

Magnolia Pictures has released the first teaser trailer and poster for director David Gordon Green’s (Pineapple Express) upcoming dramedy Prince Avalanche.  The film stars Paul Rudd and Emile Hirsch and follows two workers as they spend their summer repainting traffic lines in the middle of a country highway.  I caught the pic at Sundance and it's a wonderfully peculiar film with two fantastic performances from Rudd and Hirsch.  There are literally only four characters that appear onscreen in the entire movie, with Rudd and Hirsch sharing the lion's share of the pic's screentime alone.  It's really the perfect blend of Green's indie and commercial comedy sensibilities, as the film's scenes alternate between hilarity and heartbreak.  This trailer does a nice job of showcasing the chemistry between Rudd and Hirsch while playing up the pic's funnier moments, but there are plenty of nice dramatic beats to be found in the full feature as well. Hit the jump to watch the trailer, and click here to read Matt’s review of the film from Sundance.  Prince Avalanche will be available in theaters and on VOD August 9th. Click over to Apple to watch in HD. Here’s the official synopsis for Prince Avalanche: An odd couple of sorts, meditative and stern Alvin and his girlfriend’s brother, Lance, dopey and insecure, leave the city behind to spend the summer in solitude repainting traffic lines down the center of a country highway ravaged by wildfire. As they sink into their job in the remarkable landscape, they learn more than they ...

Based on the 2009 cult classic film, the Zombieland TV pilot is now available for viewing on Amazon Instant Video, and customer feedback, viewership numbers and other factors will decide whether it will be picked up to series. In the series, fearless foursome Tallahassee (Kirk Ward), Columbus (Tyler Ross), Wichita (Maiara Walsh) and Little Rock (Izabela Vidovic) search for a place to call home while they eliminate zombies along the way. During this recent interview to discuss the TV version of Zombieland, co-creators and executive producers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick talked about the journey from TV series to movie and now back to TV pilot, what it’s been like to work with Amazon, what motivated the decision to have the same characters from the movie on the TV show, how they envision it as a road show, how much gore they can have, what Kirk Ward (who was originally cast as Tallahassee before being replaced by Woody Harrelson) brings to this version of the character, what led them to the 30-minute format, whether they could have any surprise cameos (Bill Murray made a very memorable one in the film), what will determine whether the pilot is successful enough to go to series, and when they might know if they’re picked up.  Check out what they had to say after the jump. Question:  How did Zombieland end up as a TV show, and how did it evolve to where it is now, on Amazon? RHETT REESE:  Well, we always intended Zombieland to be ...

MAN OF STEEL Director Zack Snyder Talks Superman’s Flying and His “Ancient” Approach to Designing Krypton

While we all waited a long, long time to see the first footage from Man of Steel (especially given that the film started production in the fall of 2011), as the release date looms closer we’re starting to learn much more about Zack Snyder’s new take on Superman.  The director recently addressed the backlash he received when it was first announced that he would be directing the new Superman movie, and now a new interview has surfaced in which Snyder talks more specifically about how he approached the “Superman flying” scenes and creating the planet of Krypton.  In addition, he spoke about about the first time he saw Henry Cavill in the suit.  Hit the jump to read on. Speaking with SFX (via CBM), Snyder talked about how he crafted the scenes in Man of Steel in which Superman flies: “It’s a more violent experience. It’s raw. It takes effort to do it, and that’s what we were really going for. It’s almost like there’s this kind of Right Stuff quality to it. He’s constantly booming around, accelerating. You think he’s going as fast as he can and then it’s like ‘Yeeaahh!’ He’s always got an extra gear he can use.” We got quite a few good looks at the planet of Krypton in the most recent Man of Steel trailer, and the filmmaker spoke about his design for Superman’s home world: “I really wanted my Krypton to be this kind of special place that’s immersive and totally different from Earth, but not unbelievable. ...

Opening this weekend is director Michael Bay’s fantastic dark comedy Pain & Gain.  The film is based on a crazy true story and stars Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne Johnson as two bodybuilders who get caught up in an extortion ring and kidnapping scheme that goes terribly wrong.  Pain and Gain also stars Anthony Mackie, Rebel Wilson,  Tony Shalhoub, Ed Harris, Rob Corddry, Ken Jeong, and Bar Paly.  For more on the film, watch some clips or the red-band trailer. Last week at the Miami press junket, I landed an exclusive interview with Tony Shalhoub.  We talked about what it was like to work with Michael Bay, his reaction to finding out the story was based on real events, the great work by all the actors, and more.  In addition, as a huge fan of Galaxy Quest, I couldn't help but have him reminiscence about making that movie and how it's stood the test of time.  Hit the jump to watch the interview and definitely check out Pain and Gain this weekend.  It’s absolutely worth seeing. Thursday TV Ratings: HANNIBAL Drops, BIG BANG THEORY Hits Season Low, COMMUNITY Ties Series Low

Thursday evening’s TV ratings are in, and the networks faced a sharp drop in viewership against the NFL Draft.  Here’s a brief look at the highlights: NBC’s fantastic new drama series Hannibal sadly saw another drop in ratings, as last night’s episode hit a 1.0 rating in the 18-49 demo and 2.4 million viewers.  That’s down four tenths from last week’s 1.4 rating. Even though CBS stalwart The Big Bang Theory drew more total viewers than all of NBC’s programming combined (yes, really), the show hit a season low rating of 4.2 for a drop of a full ratings point from its last originals' 5.2 rating.  Nevertheless, the comedy dominated the night with 14.38 million viewers. Back over at NBC, though, a Jim Rash-penned episode of Community notched a series low 1.0 rating and 2.4 million viewers.  A sad fate for what was by far the best episode of an uneven season. Hit the jump for the full ratings report for Thursday, April 25th, including Parks and Recreation, Person of Interest, Scandal, Elementary, The Vampire Diaries, and more. NBC Community notched a 1.0 rating and 2.4 million viewers, tying its series low performance and dropping three tenths from last week’s 1.3 rating. A new episode of Parks and Recreation hit a season low 1.3 rating and 2.54 million viewers, which is down four tenths from last week’s 1.7 rating for the Patton Oswalt-infused episode. The drama series Hannibal—which had its fourth episode pulled completely due to sensitivity issues—scored a 1.0 rating and 2.4 million viewers.  That’s down four ...

Summit Entertainment has released a new trailer for director Dean Parisot’s (Galaxy Quest) action-comedy sequel Red 2.  The spy follow-up pits ex-CIA operative Frank Moses (Bruce Willis) against Victoria (Helen Mirren) when MI6 greenlights his assassination as Interpol’s “Most Wanted.”  This trailer introduces us to the film's new characters, as Anthony Hopkins plays a living MacGuffin (similar to John Hurt's character in Crystal Skull) and Catherine Zeta-Jones plays an old flame of Willis' character who joins the group to combat a common enemy.  Byung Hun Lee appears to bring some freshness to the film's action sequences, and the humorous tone is spot-on thanks to the sensibilities of Parisot.  All in all, Red 2 looks to be quite the fun ride. Hit the jump to watch the trailer.  The film also stars Mary-Louise Parker and John Malkovich.  Red 2 opens on July 19th. Via Yahoo!
